How to Create Training and Development Presentations that aren’t Boring!

Use slides to complement your Presentation; not as a crutch.

Delete the 10 point font slides from your training and development presentation! Instead, use your slides as either complements to your point you just made, or visual examples that you could speak to without requiring the audience to dissect a bunch of words on a slide.

If your audience wanted to consume this information in written format, they'd go looking for a book or a blog post. They're here to hear you speak about something, not read about it. Plus, if they're spending all their time reading your slides, they're not hearing a darn thing you're saying.

Tell a story.

Your audience wants a story. Over and over again, I see the best training and development speakers opting for compelling, illustrative stories over a laundry list of facts, figures, tactics, and strategies. This isn't to say you don't use the latter to support your case. 

Make ‘em laugh.

Finally, just make people laugh if you can. I've seen amazing live training presentations where no jokes are cracked. But adding a sense of levity can make even mediocre training and development presentations far more enjoyable.

Is this the Secret to Success in Corporate Training and Development?

 

I read an interesting article written by Jason Nazar on Forbes.com this week titled “Counterintuitive Things the Most Successful People Do.” I thought it would be interesting to apply these traits to our world of training and development.

Isolate Yourself – to re energize. Many of us corporate trainers that are seemingly extroverts are introverts. If you recharge when by yourself, you need to seek out isolation from time to time.

Purposefully Offend – us corporate trainers are too worried about making everyone happy. Sometimes the only way to get someone’s attention is to call him or her out.

Seek Out Rejection – to get desensitized to the fear of it. Once we lose the fear of rejection we more easily go after what we want, and thus get more of it. Trust me this works!

Ignore Consensus – when your own data and foresight is convincingly contrary to the wisdom of the crowd (like Jobs, MLK, Gandhi). Consensus bonds us together and creates harmony, but it rarely moves us forward. Progress in eLearning sometimes has to come at the hands of an individual’s decisive disruption.

Expect Nothing – in return for helping your peers. Karma points are dispersed unexpectedly over decades, not in a scorecard of dollars.

Quit – those activities you’ll never win at, and take a new swing at the plate.

Self-Sabotage – yourself when you find yourself mired in complacency. In corporate training, don’t ever get too comfortable with the status quo, always be willing to blow it up and start all over again to truly create something better.

Abstain from Work – which others can do for you. Delegate every task that others can do 80% as well as you, and focus on those items that only you can achieve that have big payoffs. For example, hire a custom eLearning developer.

Plot & Scheme – your next couple moves ahead. If you don’t see the whole landscape of the playing field, you’re bound to get your butt kicked. In corporate training, know where you’re going far in advance of making your first move.

Underestimate Demand – for corporate training. Don’t ever assume people want what you got, and you’ll always have the appropriate amount of urgency and hustle to validate what you’re trying to achieve.

Yahoo's Outrageous Decision to Ban Working From Home!

 

As you know by now, Yahoo CEO Marissa Mayer has announced beginning June 1, there will be no more working from home for Yahoo employees.

I know many people in our world of Corporate Training and Development work from home and are quite productive to say the least.  

I can tell you our Learning Management System Tech team works from home. This team is highly motivated, connected to our company and very productive. “A variety of studies show that telecommuting and working from home is associated with higher productivity,” says David Lewin, management professor at the University of California, Los Angeles. “Analytically, it’s not at all clear this would benefit Yahoo. They could wind up with negative performance effects.”

I know from my own experience, working from home—whether occasionally or full time cuts out wasted commuting time every day.
Additionally, with mobile and video conferencing technology there’s less and less need to be present in the physical workplace.

So my fellow Training and Development Professional friends, WHAT DO YOU THINK?

1.  Talking Crap: Admit it, all of us online sales training professionals have  said things like “He’s so darn annoying the way he _____.” I heard, “I’m sure I’ll find something annoying about you and tell everyone about it.” You said, “The last company I worked with was terrible, oh, and the one before that, too. Just awful.” I heard, “I’m really difficult to deal with, will be a terrible partner, and will share my misinformed opinions with everyone I meet.” Unless there’s a material breach of ethics involved, keep your trap shut.

2.  Over-promising: In online sales training, expectations matter. If you promise me a miracle, I’ll expect it. If you promise me a little, I’ll be happy with a little and delighted with a little more. Being impressive is mostly about being reasonable in your projections and hitting them consistently.

3.  Not My Fault:  Bottom line, mistakes happen in online sales training. Have you ever noticed how some people always have a scapegoat and even a backup scapegoat? The finger is always pointing in the other direction. Occasionally, another person might have played a role. Most of the time, it’s your own fault. Own it and you will be better for it.

4.  Lack of Patience: I’ve found that nothing worthwhile comes quickly or easily in online sales training. Regardless of your goals, they will take focus, hard work, and plenty of time. Stop looking for the secret sauce or the quick fix. There aren’t any, trust me.

5.  Intention: Every day is packed with questions of how to spend your time, money, emotions, and focus. Do you know why you do what you do? I see lots of “ping pong people” bouncing between distractions. Pick something meaningful to accomplish and attack it. You’ll be amazed at what you can do.

6. Overcommitting: You can’t juggle an endless number of commitments. Every time you say “yes,” you’re saying “no” to something else. Eventually, things break down and blow up. Ask yourself if the commitment in question will help achieve your goals. If not, decline.

7. Subtraction by Addition: When things get hard, the inclination is to do more. Work more hours. Demand more from others. In the short term, it feels great. Your brain rewards you for “doing more.” But when you look back, you’ll find you accomplished less. Instead, focus on addition by subtraction. Spend more time thinking, and less time doing. Be still. Be alone. Be thoughtful.

1. Consider the J-curve The J-curve describes how most private equity investments perform. At first, the income from an investment is negative as the investor spends money to fix something or make long-term improvements. Over time, those investments pay off, creating revenue. That initial dip, followed by the upward slope, looks like the letter J. On line sales training is no different. Think about how long it will take for hires to pay for themselves, and build your online sales training accordingly.

2. Teach new employees the core of the business first. You will feel pressure to get your new employees up and running to drive profits, and you should. But new employees all want to know what the business is “really about”--its core. Focus on this first. Then train them on what they need to do every day through your online sales training curriculum.

3. Make them accretive. The flip side of providing new employees a good understanding of what your company does is getting them to produce. Use a “return on investment” mindset, investing in these employees early, so they become accretive to your business over the long term.

4. Take a fresh look.  New employees bring their own expertise and experiences to your company. Tell them to speak up when they see something that was done differently at their previous employer and find ways to pull what you’ve learned into your online sales training. Coach them on how to share insights with you and your training team without implying that things were “better” at the other place—they may have been, but new ideas are easier to accept if they’re framed as suggestions rather than criticism. Encourage open-ended suggestions, such as, “What if we tried it this way…?”
